How private aircraft acquisition actually works

Buying an aircraft is less about the model and more about the process. Here is how a disciplined acquisition runs, start to finish.

Start with the mission, not the model

The most expensive mistakes happen when a buyer falls for an airframe before defining the job it has to do. Range, typical passenger count, runway access, cabin needs and annual hours drive the shortlist — not the badge on the tail. A good broker pins the mission down first, in writing, then works backward to the aircraft.

Buy-side representation

On the buy side, your broker works for you: sourcing candidates, including aircraft that are not publicly listed, and keeping your identity and intentions discreet until it serves you to reveal them. That discretion is not a nicety — it protects your negotiating position.

Valuation and the offer

Price should come from evidence: recent comparable sales, the aircraft's hours and maintenance status, and the condition of its records. An offer built on comparables holds up under scrutiny; one built on hope does not.

Diligence: records are everything

In aviation, the paperwork is the asset almost as much as the metal. Logbooks, airworthiness directives, damage history, title and lien status, and maintenance tracking all get verified before money moves. This is where aviation counsel and a technical advisor earn their fee.

An aircraft with gaps in its records is worth less than an identical one with clean paper — sometimes far less.

Closing and delivery

With diligence clear, terms are papered, a pre-purchase inspection is completed, funds are coordinated, and the aircraft is delivered and registered. A clean close is quiet — no surprises, no retrading at the last minute.

Why off-market matters

Some of the best aircraft never appear on a listing site. They move through relationships. That is why a broker's network — and their credibility with sellers — often matters more than any database.
